Web Design Planning Tips

If you were to simply switch on your PC and start designing a website, you’d surely fail miserably in your venture. Web design requires planning – a good amount of groundwork where you choose the structure, layout, ambience, and so on for the target audience. Only when these issues are met can you start the designing of the site. Before hunting for the planning efforts, take a look at some of the salient planning tips on website design.

Selecting the Web Designer

Whether you are selecting a web designer or doing the entire bit yourself, you need to first identify the designer. For this, fixing the budget is very important. Depending on the amount of money you can put in, you can hire a freelancer, website designing team, website designer, or do the entire designing yourself.

Apart from the money, you should also see the level of expertise in the website designing arena. Generally, hiring an efficient designing team is much more fruitful than hiring a team of experts yourself.

Selecting the Host Service Provider

After selecting the web designer, you need to find out a suitable host service provider. A good and an efficient host provider go a long way in making your website user-friendly. If the hosting site closes down or gives you low-quality services, you know that the host service provider has not been working well enough.

Check the Tools – Especially Freeware

If you were to use a freeware or any other element that is downloaded for free, make sure to scan the tool and find out everything about it. Don’t forget about the images, royalty fee, etc. You should pay for all that you’ve got from the Internet. If you don’t and are caught one day, you’d need to then pay a hefty amount of fine.

Look for SEO–Savvy Attributes

The website planning tips include the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) efforts. For instance, you should use optimum amount of graphics, keyword-centric content, effective layout and navigation. Beware of dubious sites – such as link farms – when building up links for your site. You should also use White Hat SEO or legal SEO tricks rather than unethical ones.

Find Out the Purpose of the Website

If you know the purpose of your website, you’ve done a major chunk of hard work. Depending on this, you should also come up with the target audience. The content, textual matter, graphics, and layout should reflect the theme and purpose of your website.

Hunt for Content & Graphics

It is a general rule that the content and image should be in the ratio of 4:1 only. Interspersed with relevant keywords, the content should be intelligently distributed in the pages.

Make sure you have the theme, one-main idea, exemplary statements and thoughts, logo, button and icon structure, and many such more attributes of website design, are firmly decided and worked on in the website design planning stage.

So, the planning of the website design includes the draft of the structure, layout, and navigation scheme of your website. You should blend these features before embarking into the real building stage.

5 Important Rules in Website Design

When it comes to your website, extra attention should be paid to every minute detail to make sure it performs optimally to serve its purpose. Here are seven important rules of thumb to observe to make sure your website performs well.

1) Do not use splash pages

Splash pages are the first pages you see when you arrive at a website. They normally have a very beautiful image with words like “welcome” or “click here to enter”. In fact, they are just that — pretty vases with no real purpose. Do not let your visitors have a reason to click on the “back” button! Give them the value of your site up front without the splash page.

2) Do not use excessive banner advertisements

Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you will be wasting valuable website real estate. Instead, provide more valueable content and weave relevant affiliate links into your content, and let your visitors feel that they want to buy instead of being pushed to buy.

3) Have a simple and clear navigation

You have to provide a simple and very straightforward navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it. Stay away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors don’t know how to navigate, they will leave your site.

4) Have a clear indication of where the user is

When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. That way, they will be able to browse relevant information or navigate to any section of the site easily. Don’t confuse your visitors because confusion means “abandon ship”!

5) Avoid using audio on your site

If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site, reading your content, you will want to make sure they’re not annoyed by some audio looping on and on on your website. If you insist on adding audio, make sure they have some control over it — volume or muting controls would work fine.
